Since 1990, over 774 children have died from heatstroke when left alone in a vehicle. Because this is an alarming and growing problem, I decided to attack the problem by designing a low-cost, programmable device: iCAS, the Infant Car Alert System. The objective of this device is to save infants/toddlers when they're left in the car by tracking their presence and alerting parents or caregivers via text message and a loud alarm. This all was accomplished through Arduino paired with other sensors. Once the baby sits in their car seat, a switch (located under the seat) is activated, turning on the entire system. It automatically goes into a temperature loop, checking if the atmosphere's temperature is above 82 degrees (fatal temperature for a child) using a temperature sensor. Once it is, the alarm is activated and the text message is sent to family members.
