<html><body><h3>Introduction</h3><p>The goal of this project is to create a game resembling an old kids toy Simon. in Simon you repeat a sequence of colors and sounds, but our spin on this will be that it's only by ear. This game will train your ear to pick up intervals between tones and challenge your memory for recalling sequences of notes. It's much more difficult! The great thing about this project is it demonstrates many common circuit components at once. Learn how to use MP3 sound effects, LM386 op amp, keypad, LCD Display with Arduino in an impressive new game. </p><p>When we turn it on we'll see a prompt that says "select game mode" and we can press one for practice or two for game play. In game mode one the toy operates like a piano where you can press the keys and hear the corresponding notes to train your brain for the upcoming game. In game mode two the game starts. Arduino will play a sequence of notes and you must play them back. Each turn gets more difficult by adding another note to the sequence. Remember, you can only use your ears! </p><p> </p><h3>Prototype</h3><p>This is a new, complex project, so before spending too much time delving into details, the first goal was to produce a simple python software prototype. Prototyping Arduino projects is critical to success. The key is to prove your design in the least expensive and time consuming way possible. In this project python was used to mock out the design and test the game play well before buying or soldering our first part. Luckily, the game was awesome! </p><p>If you want to play the python version, no hardware needed, check this out: </p><p><a href="https://github.com/alittletech1/notes/blob/60621631825ec2beb3c6eb6f64cf374a6373a2ab/notes.py">https://github.com/alittletech1/notes/blob/60621631825ec2beb3c6eb6f64cf374a6373a2ab/notes.py </a></p><p> </p><h3>The Circuit</h3><p>Here is a basic rundown of the circuit diagram: </p><ol><li>in the top left is the power switch and battery and on indication led </li><li>underneath that we have a DF player mini and that's going to play the notes in MP3 form </li><li>underneath that is an audio module which is just a basic op amp circuit to provide more power to the sound </li><li>a custom keypad that's connected to our Arduino circuit (you can go out and buy a matrix keypad or you can use a custom one like we did). We used Arduino pins D42 -D52 for this. However, only the even pins we used to keep the pins in a straight line and make wiring easier. </li><li>on the right we have a 4x20 LCD display to show some text output during the game. </li></ol><p><a href="https://github.com/alittletech1/notes/blob/18d4a98937b0eac2cc8b88a4fd2f5beddd544a30/circuit.png">https://github.com/alittletech1/notes/blob/18d4a98937b0eac2cc8b88a4fd2f5beddd544a30/circuit.png </a></p><figure><img src="https://projects.arduinocontent.cc/2460f3a0-d80c-4102-9e9f-0d651fea2dad.png"/><figcaption>Arduino Notes Game Circuit Diagram</figcaption></figure><p>One thing to note in the diagram above is we are using differing voltages for some of the components. The Arduino Mega operates on 5v, while the NewHaven LCD display is 3.3v. We use 1k ohm resistors between the data ports to ensure compatibility.  Additionally, we run the LM386 Op Amp off the 9v source. Conveniently, the Arduino takes a Vin of 9V and down converts to 5v and 3.3v for us. </p><p>To see the game and and exact wiring of all the components in more detail please check out this video: </p><p> </p><figure><iframe src="https://youtu.be/in30QGYNcX0"></iframe></figure><p> </p><p>After wiring up all the components the next thing is to create the Arduino Code and game logic and code to control all the components.
